Lottery scam targets Durango residents

Wednesday, March 22, 2006 posted 09:28 AM EST

A lottery scam from Spain is targeting Durango residents' bank accounts, the Durango Police Department warned Tuesday.

The department urged Durangoans not to respond to letters titled "RE: Award Claim Final Notifications."

The letters, with the return address ELGORDO Loteria Primitiva, Plaza De Spana E-28076, Madrid, Spain, claim that recipients have won money in a lottery. They were mailed March 10 from Spain to some Durango-area residents, according to Durango Police Sgt. Tony Archuleta.

Respondents to the letters get requests for bank account information, according to Archuleta.

"Never give your personal information or bank account information to anyone over the phone that you are not familiar with," Archuleta said in a statement.
