Florida Lottery sales top $4B

Floridians and tourists are playing the lottery in record numbers, according to the Florida Lottery's most recent fiscal report.
During fiscal 2007, the Lottery recorded more than $4 billion in sales, resulting in more than $1.26 billion contributed to Florida's education system, the fifth consecutive year of more than $1 billion contributed, a release says. The Lottery's net sales for fiscal year 2007 totaled $4.12 billion, an increase of $190 million from the previous year.
Representing about 5 percent of the state's total education budget, lottery funds contribute to kindergarten through 12th grade programs in Florida's 67 school districts, school construction and renovation projects throughout the state, additional funding for state universities and community colleges, the Bright Futures Scholarship Program, and other state student financial aid.
Since its debut in 1988, the Florida Lottery has contributed more than $17 billion to the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund, the release says.
